Meet the Doctors

Dr Mark Shillito is a dynamic and flexible psychiatrist and psychotherapist specialising in work with adolescents and young adults. Dr Shillito also has a keen interest in supporting transgender patients through their transition.

He has been a clinical lecturer and tutor to psychiatrist trainees and medical students at the University of Adelaide and Sydney University as well as a visiting speaker at international meetings and conferences.

He believes in tailoring therapy to individual people, especially where standardised therapies have had less success. He has practised medicine and psychiatry for over 33 years.

FACIALTEAM co-founders and head surgeons, Dr Luis Capitán (Spain) and Dr Daniel Simon (Brazil), are specialists in oral and maxillofacial surgery and began offering Facial Feminisation Surgery in 2007. They have developed pioneering techniques, advanced research in this field and completed more than 850 facial gender confirmation procedures together.

Combining the latest technology in surgical techniques with a multidisciplinary approach, they achieve excellent results with proven expertise. The team comprehensively and meticulously analyzes each case taking into account factors from multiple perspectives: craniofacial bone structure, plastic/aesthetics and hair – considering all of them within the frame of contemporary concepts of facial gender.

The co-directors of FACIALTEAM are recognised leading experts in facial bone sculpture and are frequent key speakers at scientific conferences. In 2014 they published award-winning and groundbreaking research on facial feminisation in the scientific journal Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, official publication of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. Further research regarding a modernised philosophy and approach to facial surgery for transgender women is pending publication in this journal.

Both surgeons are members of EPATH and WPATH and promote international standards for best practices for transgender patients.

Dr Marci Bowers of California, is widely recognised as a pioneer in the field of Genital Reassignment Surgery and is the first transgender woman to perform transgender surgery.

She is a pelvic and gynaecologic surgeon with nearly 25 years’ experience in women’s healthcare and working with the transgender community. She is a University of Minnesota Medical School graduate and studied her specialties at the University of Washington in Seattle.

Dr. Bowers is a member of WPATH, and serves on the board of directors for both GLAAD and the Transgender Law Center. Dr. Bowers has become an international authority on clitoral reconstruction for women who have suffered Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), one of a select few surgeons worldwide performing FGM reversal. She has been the subject of numerous documentaries, articles and features including appearances on Oprah, CBS Sunday Morning and Discovery Health.

Dr. Bowers was recently honored as one of the 100 most influential LGBT people on the Guardian’s 2012 World Pride Power List, in addition to being recognised as one of Huffington Post’s 50 Transgender Icons.

Dr Hyung-Tae Kim is director of Yeson Voice Center and one of the best ENT specialists in the areas of laryngeal surgery and treatment. He established Yeson Voice Center in September 2003 – his pioneering competitive voice examination system, specialised laryngeal surgeries and phonoplasty is now leading to a new paradigm of voice care.

International patients from more than 40 countries visit Yeson Voice Center for its main surgery called Vocal Folds Shortening and Advancement of Anterior Commissure (known as Voice Feminisation Surgery). In this surgery skin incision is not required, proving its safety and high satisfaction rate with minimised complications. Through this surgery, a natural increase in one’s voice fundamental frequency is possible, giving transgender women a permanently feminised voice.
